Empowerment.

Through the eyes of a lens, fifteen women were featured in an installation focused around the term empowerment. As a celebration of women's history these women and the members of the non-binary community were questioned about what empowerment meant to them, as survivors and fighters. The installation was featured in the opening reception for Flagler College’s Communication Week with over 150 people of all ages in attendance. The Goal was to showcase the power and respect that is behind femininity and how it has no boundaries.

Note: Out of respect for these individuals, the audio from the event has not been included on this website.

“…men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at. This determines not only most relations between men and women but also the relation of women to themselves. The surveyor of women in herself is male: the surveyed female. Thus she turns herself into an object- and most particularly an object of vision: a sight.”

Music by: Em Bell

The installation featured ambient music produced by a female artist who focuses around creating an atmosphere with sound. The artist worked closely to create a sound that captured the emotions that these individuals expressed. It provides both a calm presence but there is pain underneath. Her work is not only powerful in itself but also encourages women to empower themselves.
